Mercy In Action

Earth Partnership

The Sisters of Mercy recognise Earth as a living being and primary resource to be respected, honoured and appreciated

Our commitment to preserve the integrity of all creation is grounded in a theology of whanaungatanga, right relationship with God, self, others and creation.

Sustainable practices and care of grounds and gardens is a particular feature of many Mercy communities and facilities.  In educational facilities appreciation of creation and respect for Earth is fostered in programmes and activities for students.

Te Waipuna Puawai Mercy Oasis Ltd

This community development initiative is grounded in a theology of whanaungatanga right relationship with God, self, others and creation. This understanding of right relationship is also reflected in a growing awareness of a new cosmology and a new story, which affirms our capacity for intimate communion with the natural world, and the universe as a 'communion of subjects rather than a collection of objects'.(Thomas Berry)

Te Waipuna Puawai site includes an organic garden and wetland restoration project.  Sisters living in sustainable community housing offer a living model that bears witness to a healthy ecological relationship with Earth and Universe to preserve the cycles of life.

Te Ukaipo Mercy Initiatives for Rangatahi

Te Ukaipo appreciates Papatuanuku Earth as taonga for future generations.  Ventures in the community, including Project Twin Streams, a partnership with Waitakere City, promote daily living practices that nourish sustainable communities.  Local residents and community groups are engaged in restoration and on-going care of the local Swanson Stream as part of the holistic focus of Te Ukaipo.
